Millarville Polocrosse Club is a non-profit club, committed to teaching and playing Polocrosse. We have been playing on a field just a couple of minutes north-west of Millarville in Alberta, Canada since 2004. The gorgeous backdrop of the rockies, the friendly atmosphere, and the great game of Polocrosse will ensure that you come back for more. Everyone is invited to join our club, and spectators are always welcome. Please do not hesitate to contact us for more information about Polocrosse, the club, or upcoming events!
The Game
It is a team sport played on horseback using a racket and a sponge rubber ball. Teams comprised of six players make up 2 sides (three players are on the field, while three rest). Each side of three is made up of a number 1 (the goal scorer), a number 2 (center fielder or play maker) and a number 3 (defense). There is no goalie defending the goal posts that stand 2.5 meters apart and infinitely high. Play is in timed periods or chukkas lasting up to 8 minutes with each side playing up to 4 chukkas. The game begins with three players from each team lining up two abreast in center field facing the umpire. Play commences when the umpire throws the ball down the center of the line and each team tries to take control. The ball is scooped up and carried down field and ultimately thrown between the opponents goal posts. The opposing team tries to block the ball carrier and/or dislodge the ball from their racket and cause a turn over. The game is closely monitored by an umpire, ensuring the safety of both the players and horses.
KING OF THE ONE HORSE SPORTS
Unlike its namesake Polo, you need only one horse. In fact you are only allowed to use one horse when entering a competition. There are no limits as to size, age or breed, only stallions are restricted. A wide spectrum of horses and riders are now competing from team penners to three day eventers, Quarter Horses to Arabians, professionals to new comers. Emphasis is on safety, conditioning, training, horsemanship and fun.
Something For Everyone
Polocrosse is a sport open to every age and ability. We have people joining that are just learning to ride, to people that have competed internationally in other disciplines. You can move up the levels as quickly as you want and be as competitive as you have time for.
Played around the world
Polocrosse was first developed in England in the 1930’s as a set of exercises to teach and improve riding skills. Reaching Australia in the early 1940’s polocrosse soon evolved into a fast paced competitive sport. Polocrosse is now played worldwide. The Polocrosse World Cup was held April 23-29 2007 and included teams from Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Zimbabwe, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States and Canada. The next World Cup in 2011, being held in the United Kingdom, hopes to host an additional four countries from France, Germany, Norway and Zambia. There will be numerous opportunities to travel around the world with a team over the next several years, and even the chance to represent Canada on the next World Cup team. So now is your chance to learn this internationally played sport and meet people from around the world!
